0. Introduction

Whenever we give a formal speech, write an essay or do translation, we have to

consider word order to emphasize the most useful information we want to deliver.

Word order, which takes an important part in both linguistics and translation study

fields refers to the permutation and combination pattern of various linguistic units. In

the past decades, there have been many studies on the factors leading to different

word order, the exact differences between English and Chinese word order, and

translation strategies to change word order. On the basis of former researches, this

thesis focuses on thinking pattern, the root of different word order, and contrasts

Chinese word order with English word order from four aspects. The author gives

some translation strategies as well.

The body of this thesis consists of four parts. In the first part, the author gives

the definition and functions of word order. The second part deals with thinking pattern,

—the factor causing different word order, and a general introduction to the features of

English and Chinese word order. The third part focuses on the differences between

English and Chinese word order from four aspects, namely subject and predicate

structure, modifiers, time order and logical order. At the same time, the author also

gives some translation strategies that can be used to change word order from the four

aspects above. Finally, a conclusion will be made in the last part of the thesis.

Through analyzing the differences between Chinese and English word order, we will

achieve the goal of translating one language into another without missing basic

information or distorting the connotation of the original text.

1.Word order

In this part of the thesis, the author firstly gives the definition of word order,

and then introduces three functions of word order.

“Word order in essence is the syntagmatic ordering of elements according to the

grammatical relations” (Liu 141). This ordering is always fixed and can not be
