:《呼啸山庄》与《基督山伯爵》中复仇的对比
Conclusion
Revenge is the most dominant theme in the two stories. From Revenge in
Wuthering Height we know that revenge is not an ideal way to solve the problem.
Heathcliff's revenge is more subtle and he is seen as evil. Bronte corroborates that
revenge is not only a harsh and rash way to life, but is counter-productive and hurtful.
The Count of Monte Cristo is a great story that helps us to realize how far the reaches
of vengeance can really go. Everyone feels the need for revenge but many times
people go beyond the limit. Only the great people can give up hopes of vengeance and
pardon their enemy. Monte Cristo’s ultimate victory is not the defeat of his enemies
but the spiritual reassessment which enable him to rejoin the human race and get new
life in hope.
Revenge is seen in many different lights and executed in many different ways,
but in the end the result is always worse than before. Revenge drives people to do the
unthinkable things, even to go so far as to hurt the ones they love to get back at
another. Being usually brought about by selfishness and honor, revenge at its greatest
is started because of love. In the case of Heathcliff, his love for Catherine drives him
insane for revenge when she does not return the feeling.
The only difference between the processes of Heathcliff's revenge and Monte
Cristo’s revenge is that Heathcliff does it by himself but Monte Cristos changes his
own identity to get revenge on enemies. And Heathcliff's revenge is swift and brutal,
but Monte Cristo's is just and righteous. In comparison the last results of both
processes are also different, Heathcliff dies but Edmond leaves.
From the two stories one can get different meanings of the revenge. This is a
good lesson for each of the characters who are seeking to revenge on other characters.
The lesson is: revenge may sound sweet, but be careful because it can blind you.
