C. The Differences of the Revenge’s Results

When Heathcliff finally gets his revenge, he is not happy. Through the process of

his revenge one can see Heathcliff hurts every person. The more Heathcliff loves

Catherine, the more he is obsessed with revenge. Revenge makes him cold and

calculating. Heathcliff takes Hindley's role of the oppressor, while Hindley's son

Hareton turns out to be like Heathcliff in his youth. “Five minutes ago, Hareton

seemed a personification of my youth, not a human being”③. Hareton looks like

Heathcliff for Heathcliff’s wild and brutish ways to him and his love of the younger

Catherine.

“I know that ghosts have wandered on earth. Be with me always taking any form

drive me mad! Only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! Oh, God!

It is unutterable! I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul! ” ④

Heathcliff haunts by the ghost of Catherine because he is Catherine’s “murderer”.

Only after Catherine's death does Heathcliff realize his mistake, and only at the end of

Wuthering Heights does he forgive Catherine and finds some peace. Heathcliff starts

to see and hear Catherine everywhere. He quits eating, eventually dying after

several days.

The Edmond’s revenge is now complete. The Count of Monte Cristo has

assumed the role of Providence by destroying all that has been built by his enemies

during his long years of imprisonment. He has succeeded in his quest for slow

revenge. His enemies have suffered for their sins. He has one last meeting with

Mercedes. Mercedes shall lead a life of prayer in a convent, for her son has gone to

rebuild his future in the army. Then he leaves aboard a ship with Haydee, his own new

love.
