Step VI Assignment

1. Ask students to act out their play about the ending of the text next class

Scene 4 The home of Mathilde (M) and Pierre (P), in 1870. (Mathilde comes back to her home, looking very sad.) P: Oh, dear. Where have you been? What’s the matter? M: (In a low voice.) Dear, I want to tell you some news, some bad news.

P: (A bit anxious.) What really happened, Mathilde?

M: Today I happened to meet Jeanne in the park. Do you still remember her? P: Of course, I’ll never forget her. It is all because of her

necklace that we both have suffered so much. (A little more excited.) What did she tell you?

M: She told me the necklace we borrowed from her was not a real one. It was made of glass. It was worth 500 francs at most.

P: (Quite surprised.) What? Pardon? It was false. Really? M: Yes. She herself told me. I didn’t believe her at first. (Full of tears in her eyes.)

P: (About to cry.) My God! What should we do?

M: (Starting crying.) Please forgive me, my dear. It was all because of me.

(Just then there was a knock at the door. Jeanne is holding the diamond necklace in her hand.)

M: It is you, Jeanne. I never thought you were coming.

J: I’m very sorry, Mathilde. When I heard about your story, I really felt apologetic for this. I have decided to return the necklace to you. Now here it is! M: (Quite surprised.) But ...

J: Well, I’ve got something important to do. So I’m leaving. M: Thank you, Jeanne. Bye!

P: (Looking at Mathilde.) Isn’t it a dream, Mathilde? M: (The music of My heart goes on) Let’s dance, dear!

3. Next I’ll ask some students to write their translations on the blackboard.

T: First let’s do word-guessing. One student gives the answer, the other student makes a sentence with it. Are you clear? The first letter of the word has been given.
