Step I Revision 1. Greetings 2. Lead-in
T: In the speaking classes, we have made up stories and shortplays by ourselves. Some students even put on wonderful performance for us. Today, we’ll talk about a play based on The Necklace written by Guy de Maupassant. He was a well-known French short story writer and novelist. In this class, we’ll come to pre-reading first, then reading, and finally, post-reading.
Step II Pre-reading 1. Discussion
T: Now discuss the following questions with your partner. Then I’ll ask some students to report your work. Are you clear? Ss: Yes, sir/madam.
1. Have you ever acted in a play? What role did you play? 2. Have you ever tried to write a play? 3. What kind of plays do you like: funny plays, serious plays or sad plays?
(After a few minutes.)
T: Now who’d like to report your work to us? Volunteer!
S: Let me try. At last year’s Christmas party, I acted as Father Christmas. I had red clothes on and wore white beard. I carried a large bag on my back. There were a lot of Christmas presents in it. If one student acted very well, I would send him/her a little present. We really enjoyed ourselves. T: Thank you. Now another student.
S: Also at the Christmas party, our class put on a play The Blind Men and the Elephant. I was asked to write the play. It was a bit difficult at the beginning. But with the help of our English teacher, we wrote a good play. We also performed very well.

We even won the first prize.
T: I’m glad to hear that. Good luck next time. Now the third question. S: I like funny plays both in English and in Chinese. The
reason is very simple. They can make us laugh. They can make us forget our worry and trouble. They can make our life easier and more colourful.
S: But I like serious plays. They cause us to think of others, help others and make our life more meaningful.
S: Well, I prefer sad plays. It is said history is a good mirror. Maybe we can learn a lot from the sad stories. After all, we say, failure is the mother of success.
T: Thank you very much for your wonderful speeches. Now let’s come to our text — THE NECKLACE.
Step III Reading
1. Read the new words after the tape; (生词亦可放在课前 预习)
2. Different kinds of jewellery.
T: Do you know the names of the above jewellery? Ss: They are necklace, ring, bracelet and earrings. T: Very good. Thank you.
3. Fast-reading questions for Scene 1
1. When and where did the story happen? 2. Why didn’t Jeanne recognise Mathilde at first? 3. Why did Mathilde borrow a necklace from her friend?
(Allow the students several minutes to read Scene 1 fast to answer the above questions.)
T: Since you have finished reading, let’s talk about the

questions. Volunteer!
S: First, the story happened in a park in Paris, one afternoon in 1870.
S: Second, because she looked older than her age.
S: Third, because she and her husband were invited to a ball at the palace, she thought she needed to borrow some jew-ellery. 4. Careful reading with more questions:
1. Why did Mathilde look very old? 2. What was her life like in the past ten years? 3. Where was Pierre working then?
(After a few minutes.)
T: Now let’s come to the first question. Volunteer!
S: First, because she had been working very hard for ten years.
S: Second, she had been living a hard life. Years of hard work, very little food, only a cold room to live in and never a moment’s rest. S: Third, he was working in a government office. 5. Summary of Scene 1
