T: In the speaking classes, we have made up stories and shortplays by ourselves. Some students even put on wonderful performance for us. Today, we’ll talk about a play based on The Necklace written by Guy de Maupassant. He was a well-known French short story writer and novelist. In this class, we’ll come to pre-reading first, then reading, and finally, post-reading.

Step II Pre-reading 1. Discussion

T: Now discuss the following questions with your partner. Then I’ll ask some students to report your work. Are you clear? Ss: Yes, sir/madam.

1. Have you ever acted in a play? What role did you play? 2. Have you ever tried to write a play? 3. What kind of plays do you like: funny plays, serious plays or sad plays?

(After a few minutes.)

T: Now who’d like to report your work to us? Volunteer!

S: Let me try. At last year’s Christmas party, I acted as Father Christmas. I had red clothes on and wore white beard. I carried a large bag on my back. There were a lot of Christmas presents in it.
