三、完形填空(共15题,每题1分,计15分) In China, children like to make 16 by hooking pinkies(小拇指) with each other. They say, “A pinkie promise must be 17 for 100 years.” Then they may press their thumbs(大拇指) together to complete the promise. Sometimes, 18 will hook pinkies and promise to be together forever.

There are many theories on the origin(起源) of the pinkie promise. One theory is that it may have 21 to do with the role of fingers in Chinese culture. The Chinese character for “finger” also means “aim(旨)” (referring to people’s thoughts). So hooking fingers can be seen as the exchanging of 22 . Therefore, the fingers play a(n) 23 role in making an oath(盟约): They can not only be used 24 completing a promise, but also be cut to make a blood oath. When someone swears to heaven, he uses his 25 to point to the sky.

26 , hooking fingers means making a serious promise. In some movies, a person 27 breaks a promise may have his little finger 28 off! Of course, this kind of thing is not very likely to happen in real life. But we can still see 29 important “pinkie promises” can be. So next time, when you hook pinkies with someone, you’d better be 30 with your promise! 16. A. wishes B. decisions C. promises D. mistakes 17. A. remain B. noticed C. recorded D. kept 18. who was also responsible for the eight-minute summer handover in Athens in 2004 as well as the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing in 2008 that had a big success in the world.

Unlike Athens which focused on showing Chinese history with traditional culture like red lantern and jasmine( 茉 莉 花 ), “Beijing 8 Minutes” gave special importance to the Chinese people’s sincere welcome to the world by using modern technology.

Leading the team were two dancers in costumes of panda puppets that are the world’s largest but the lightest at the same time, each weighing only about 10 kilograms. To reduce the pressure on the two dancers, researchers had tried hundreds of different materials until ending up with high-technology ones.

During the whole performance, the dancers and robots both wore LED lights on them that could be fit for the cold weather at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium without the risks of breaking.

The costumes were also made with a kind of special material to keep the dancers warm. Performers danced with 24 intelligent robots – standing for Beijing hosting the 24th Winter Olympics. They showed scenes of sports such as skating and skiing.

Pictures were projected to the icy floor while dancers skated across it, making a sense of augmented reality( 增 强 现 实 ). During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When I traveled across to the other side of the island (岛屿), I could see the other islands, and I said to myself, \England one day.\

So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole (洞) in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe (独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea.

How silly I was! Why didn't I think before I began work? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn't move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn't move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.

That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a

smaller canoe, but I did not try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison, and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island. I also

built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.

My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.

I kept food and tools (工具) at both my houses, and also wild goats (山羊). There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats' milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn (玉米) fields. And so many years went by.

D. Because the writer was busy building a second house. ( )41. From the story, we can learn that __________.

A. the writer tried to make his stay comfortable on the island B. the writer had nothing to do on the wild island

C. the writer tried to escape in the second canoe, but failed D. the writer was in prison on the island, losing his freedom (D)

The British government has started a £10 million Mandarin Excellence (普通话优秀) Program. The program will see over 5,000 British students towards fluency (流利) in Mandarin Chinese by 2020.

The program is led by local schools and supported by University College London. So far, 14 schools have taken part in the program. Hundreds of secondary school students in England have taken lessons

in Mandarin Chinese. Over the next three years, they will spend eight hours studying Mandarin Chinese every week.

Nick Gibb is an officer of the British government. He said a high level of fluency in

Mandarin Chinese would become more and more important. “Language skills are important for jobs and life. Mandarin Chinese is spoken by the largest number of people in the world. It is also one of the languages that matters the most to our country’s future. If the United Kingdom wants to remain competitive (竞争的) in the world,we do need far more of our young people leaving school with a good command (精通)of Mandarin Chinese,” Gibb added. “We hope that our young people could be given the chance to study the language. We want them to be fluent in both spoken and written Mandarin. The Mandarin Excellence Program will help us do this. It will not only open the students’ eyes, but also give them a great advantage when they enter the world of work.”

British kids, in fact, are not alone. In America, about 200,000 students are studying
