Polar bears were added to the list of endangered animals by the US government and will receive special protection under the law.But many people believe the new law does nothing to remedy the main problem bears face，the melting of Arctic sea ice.

Polar bears live in the Arctic and hunt seals and other animals from sea ice.They also travel and sometimes give birth on the ice.But sea ice is melting as the planet warms reducing the area available for the bears to live.

“The problem is very serious.If we don't take action soon，most of the ice and bears will be gone within 30 years，” said environmentalist John Roberts.

Although most scientists say human activity is causing the melting sea ice，the US government has taken no action that will stop this or protect the animals' environment.

The new policy does nothing to limit oil companies operating in and polluting the areas in which the bears live.Hunting polar bears for food by local people and trade in native handicrafts made from polar bears will also continue.Most seriously，there are no measures to reduce the pollution that causes global warming—the main cause of ice melting.

Roberts said saving the polar bears cannot be achieved by America alone.“We need international co－operation and agreements to reduce pollution because all countries are contributing to global warming.And much of the sea ice on which the bears live is outside the USA，in countries like Canada and Greenland.”
