Title: Chinese Taikonaut Back on Earth Type: Reading

Analysis of the teaching material:

This module is about the topic “Newspapers and Magazines”. And this lesson mainly talks about the experience of Yang Liwei, China’s first man in space. This lesson is a reading passage, which plays an important part in this module, because in senior English teaching, particular emphasis should be laid on the students’ reading abilities. Analysis of learners:

1. In their daily life, the students have known something about the story of Yang Liwei traveling

in space, which makes them quite interested in space and navigatior. Therefore, this topic can easily arouse their interest.

2. Many students still have trouble in reading the passages quickly and getting the key

information accurately.

3. Being poor in vocabulary and spoken English, quite a few students lack the confidence to

express themselves and communicate with others in English. So it is quite necessary and important to encourage them to speak out and express themselves in English in class. 4. Their listening ability, especially when related to news materials, still needs improving. Teaching aims:

1. Knowledge and skills: The Ss will grasp some new words about Yang Liwei and his

historical space flight. They can also improve reading skills of skimming and scanning. They can grasp the style and structure of news.

2. Process and methods: The students can grasp the vocabulary and understand the reading

materials and practise reading skills through self-study, pair work and group work.

3. Feelings, attitude and value: The students will be proud of being a Chinese because of the

great progress of China’s flight programme and love our motherland more. They may even want to make their contributions to a more powerful and advanced China.

Key points and difficult points: The grasp of the vocabulary about Yang Liwei’s space flight and the understanding the article. How to improve the Ss’ abilities of reading and speaking. Teaching theories and learning strategies:

According to the above analysis I designed different activities to realize the thought of students center as an assistant and choose different strategies, such as self-study, cooperative study, multimedia.

Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in

Guess the riddles: names of a place and a person.

(Purpose: Introduce the place and hero of this article and lead to the topic. Riddles may arouse the Ss’ interest.)

Blackboard: Chinese Taikonaut Back on Earth Step 2 Pre-reading Vocabulary 1

Analyse the feature of astronaut and learn the use of loan word and get to know the difference among astronaut, taikonaut, cosmonaut and navigator. Finish the exercise of filling blanks.

(Purpose: The Ss learn about loan words and deal with some new words.) Learn new words and play a game ( a word puzzle)

(Purpose: The Ss get familiar with the spellings of the easy words and become more interested in this lesson) Step 3 Prediction

Predict what the article is about according to the subheadings.

(Purpose: The Ss can practise their ability of prediction and imagination.) Step 4 Reading

1. Skimming

Read the article quickly and match the parts with their subheadings part 1 Conversations in Space part 2 Congratulations from the world part 3 What Happened on October 16th ,2003 (Purpose: The Ss can practise the reading skill of skimming.)

2. Scanning

1. Read part 1 and fill in the blanks of the sentences without key words. 1. Yang Liwei took off from __________ in northwest China at ________ am on Oct. 15th, 2003. 2. Step 5 Post-reading

1. Take part in the activity about Yang Liwei’s space flight.

(Purpose: Make full use of the knowledge they learned in this lesson and improve their abilities of expressing and using English.)

2. Enjoy a piece of video about the whole space journey of Yang Liwei. Express their

feelings.

(Purpose: Improve the Ss’ feelings of loving motherland and science. They can be proud of being a Chinese and decide to devote themselves to the construction of motherland.) Step 6 Summary

The successful space flight of Yang Liwei realized the Chinese people’s dream of flying into space for thousands of years. I hope several years later the students of our class can become scientists and taikonauts to devote your ability and wisdom for the space programme of China. You can write the splendid poems for the Chinese people. (Purpose: Moral education) Step 7 Homework

1. Write down Yang Liwei’s space journey and your feelings. 2. Write a piece of short news to introduce Shenzhou V.

(Purpose: Practise the Ss’ writing ability using what they learn in this lesson.) Self-examination

1.The design of this lesson arouses the Ss’ interest in study through self-study and cooperative study and gives the class to the Ss. The design realizes the teaching purposes and improves the efficiency. The Ss’ abilities of reading and speaking can be improved.

2.The control of time is very important because of the sudden event in class. Different students should be given different requirements and guide.
