My Cross-culture Communication Experience

As society develops, people are attaching much importance to cross-culture communication and globalization. Fortunately, my school provide us some opportunitiesto have the first-hand experience of different culture.

Two years ago, I went to Australia as an exchange student in the University of Adelaide for about one month. The friendly people and totally different culture impressed me a lot.There are so many difference between Chinese and Australian living habits. For an example, in Australia, people usually eat sandwich or some fast food for lunch. The first day I got there, I was shocked at my lunch prepared by my host family, because we prefer to eat a much bigger lunch in China. We like something cooked such as fried rice or noodles. But I got used to Western food in a few days. Thanks to the American movies and TV shows I had seen, I knew exactly how to eat with a fork and a knife, and some of their table manners.

The experience there is very unforgettable. My host parents treated me like their own child. They always took me to some interesting places, telling me stories and sharing their experience with me. We went to picnic outside, driving along hills and estates. The most special part was that they took me to the church, severing dinner for other people. It is their tradition to serve free dinner for whoever want it on Tuesday evening. How loving and caring are they! In the company of them, I had a really fantastic time in Australia.

My another cross-cultural communication experience was participating in the program of Bali Kemenuh Volunteer and Learning Center as a volunteer teacher in Indonesia. During the time in Bali, I participated closely together with Balinese and other international volunteers in a cultural exchange and community development project. I shared knowledge and experience with my homestay friend and taught English and Chinese at the local elementary school.

Through my own experience, I am convinced of the idea that by living with people from other places our horizons are broadened and we can become more accepting.

Maybe sometimes such cross-cultural communication can be difficult. They are originated from misunderstanding, discrimination, or merely unfamiliar with other culture. It is one thing to learn English, but it is quite another to use it and learn its culture. In my opinion, do not feel nervous when you are facing such cross-cultural misunderstanding, sincere communication with patient and tolerant attitude is the foundation to decrease it.We can take advantage of network to master more

knowledge of different culture.

In this age, cross-cultural communication is inevitable, if you can take part in such trend and communicate effectively, you will find that cross-cultural communication is much more charming than you thought.
