Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer(扫盲志愿者).The training I received, though excellent, did not tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people?s lives were like because they could not read,I realized the true importance of reading.?

My first student Marie was a 44 year old single mother of three. In the first lesson,I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn?t know which bus

to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule(时刻表),she told me it would not help because she could not read it.She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn?t always remember what she needed.Since she did not know words, she could not write out a shopping list. Also, she could only recognize items by sight,so if the product had a different label(标识),she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.?

As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie?s self confidence(自信心),which encouraged her to continue in her studies. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self confident she felt.At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son,Tony,a shy first grader, with his reading. She sat with him before he went to sleep and together they would read bedtime stories. When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read, pride was written all over her face, and she began to see how her own hard work in learning to read paid off.As she described this experience,I was proud of myself as well.I found that helping Marie to build her self confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.?

As a literacy volunteer,I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact,I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.? 1.What did the author do last summer?? A.She worked in the supermarket.?

B.She helped someone to learn to read.?

C.She gave single mothers the help they needed.?

D.She went to a training program to help a literacy volunteer.?

解析:由第一段可知,作者经过一段时间的培训后,成了一名扫盲志愿者,即义务帮助文盲学习识字。? 答案:B

2.Why didn?t Marie go to the supermarket by bus at first?? A.Because she liked to walk to the supermarket.? B.Because she lived far away from the bus stop.?

C.Because she couldn?t afford the bus ticket.?? D.Because she couldn?t find the right bus.?

解析:由第二段“she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn?t know which bus to take”和“she told me it would not help because she could not read it”两句可推知答案。?

答案:D

3.How did Marie use to find the goods she wanted in the supermarket?? A.She knew where the goods were in the supermarket.? B.She asked others to take her to the right place.? C.She managed to find the goods by their looks.?

D.She remembered the names of the goods.?

解析:由第二段“Also, she could only recognize items by sight,so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.”可推知答案。? 答案:C

4.Which of the following statements is true about Marie?? A.Marie could do things she had not been able to do before.? B.Marie was able to read stories with the help of her son.?

C.Marie decided to continue her studies in school.? D.Marie paid for her own lessons.? 答案:A

As I jogged(慢跑) over the bridge and round the corner on my regular early morning run,he was standing opposite the jeweler?s,looking extremely suspicious(可疑的).But the moment he saw me,instead of trying to avoid me,he came straight across the road to me.Halfway across he began addressing me,“I thought you were going to...” —but his voice trailed away as he received no reply and no sign of recognition from me.It was quite obvious that he had mistaken me for someone else. But he started up again as if nothing had happened.“Good morning,” he said.“Nice to bump into(遇见) someone so early.Someone to talk to.I?ve taken to talking to myself on this job.” I hate meeting people when I?m out early, and I was almost out of breath,so I just paused in my stride(大步),nodded in a friendly manner, and went on up the road. The stranger had spoken quietly, and quite slowly. And I had noticed that he was well dressed, too. But if he looked suspicious dressed like that at that time of the morning, what about me?I was in a track suit, with an old sweater round my shoulders and a cap on my head.As to his odd(奇怪的) remark about “talking to himself on the job”,I hadn?t paid any attention to it,although now it began to worry me.Was he perhaps a plain?clothes policeman? At the time I somehow felt he was.?

I had just turned the corner into the High Street when I heard the sound of breaking glass somewhere behind me,and I thought the sound came from the street I had just left.I stopped dead and almost without thinking, looked back around the corner. The stranger was not there, but almost immediately an alarm bell in the jeweler?s began ringing furiously(猛烈地).?

I found out later that a burglar(窃贼) had broken into the jeweler?s shop and stolen watches and rings worth about £5000.The police are still looking into the matter, but I?m afraid to go and tell them what I know now because they might even suspect me of committing the crime(犯罪),and it might be difficult for me to prove my innocence(无罪).After all,I haven?t offered my assistance as a witness(证人),and the only other person around that morning was the “stranger” who had spoken to me.

3.If the author had been on the spot, .?

A.he might have been badly injured?

B.the stranger wouldn?t have broken the ?window?? C.he wouldn?t have heard the alarm bell? D.he would have seen what happened?

解析:当时只有“我”是惟一的知情人,如果告知警察,既没有人证实“我”的清白,“我”也可能成为嫌疑犯。? 答案:A??

As the first report of the accident came in,Burton was sitting in his office on the top floor of the building. In a minute, when he realized the seriousness of the whole accident,he moved to a ground floor room with a small waiting?room to look into the matter himself, leaving his assistant alone to look into all the other cases.

He asked the first witness(目击者) quickly. However, the witness was quite nervous and Burton took great trouble going over what he said completely, choosing and checking each word carefully and writing the man?s words down. The witness had called the police up and had waited until the ambulances arrived. Then when the first police car arrived on the scene, the police asked him to report what he had seen and done.?

Burton explained to the witness that it would be necessary for him to go to court because of the serious disaster.Burton said that he?d be thankful if the man could keep in touch with the police.?

When the first witness had gone,Burton put his head in his hands and considered before asking for the next one.The man couldn?t be regarded as a hundred percent witness because he had been behind a wall when the explosion(爆炸) happened. But Burton had the feeling that he was dependable.?
