5. Discussion

Discuss the following questions with a partner or in a small group of 4 to 6 students.

1. Can you list some factors contributing to hypochondria (疑病症)?

The media and the Internet often contribute to hypochondria. They always show many advertisements regarding serious illnesses such as cancer, and often portray these diseases as being random, obscure and somewhat inevitable. The inaccurate portrayal of risk and the identification of non-specific signs of serious illness contribute to increasing the hypochondriac's fear that they actually have that illness.Major disease outbreaks can also contribute to hypochondria. Statistics regarding certain illnesses, such as cancer, will give hypochondriacs the illusion that they are more likely to develop the disease. A simple suggestion of mental illness can often trigger one with hypochondria to obsess over the possibility. It is common for serious illnesses or deaths of family members or friends to trigger hypochondria in certain individuals. Similarly, when approaching the age of a parent's premature death from disease, many otherwise healthy, happy individuals fall prey to hypochondria. These individuals believe they are likely to suffer from the same disease that caused their parent's death.

2. What influence can the Internet have on a hypochondriac

Reference answer: For hypochondriacs, the Internet has absolutely changed things for the worse. The easy

- 19 -

availability of health information on the web has certainly helped countless people make decisions about their health and medical treatment, but it can be disastrous for people who are likely to worry. Hypochondriacs are often not particularly careful about where they get their health information. The information offered by the Internet is vast and unregulated, so it can be misleading. This can lead to serious trouble for hypochondriacs using the web.

Wife: Where did you go recently?

Husband: I paid several visits to the British Museum.

Wife: What did you look for there?

Husband: I read a patent medicine ad several days ago. I suspected that I was suffering from all those diseases said in the ad. So I went to read up on the treatment for them. Wife: What's the result?

Husband: I found I had all the illnesses except housemaid's knee.

Wife: It's an extraordinary thing.

Husband: True. I went to see the doctor, an old friend of mine. I always receive free medical treatment from him.
