9、提喻

肯尼迪在谈到双方都在极力谋求改变那种限制任何一方发 动人类的最后决战的不稳定的恐怖形势时说: yet bo th racing to alter that uncertain balance of terro r that stays the hand of

mank ind’s finalw ar. 此处的stays the hand 属提喻, 即hand 代表 man (局部代表整体) 也就是要制止人类发动导致人类毁灭的 世界大战。因为当时以美国和苏联为首的两大阵营都在进行军 备竞赛, 双方都对时局感到不安, 而且都因庞大的军费开支而不 堪重负, 但双方都在努力保持力量的平衡, 决不让另一方占有先 机。

10、立场坚定、爱憎分明的语言风格

肯尼迪在对待不同性质的国家和国家集团时, 采取的是不

同的语气, 他的讲话态度鲜明, 立场坚定。如对与美国有着共同 的文化和精神渊源的资本主义国家, 他说我们保证将报之以真 诚不渝的友谊。(To tho se o ld alliesw ho se cultural and sp iritual o rigins w e share,w e p ledge the loyalty of faithful friends. ) 其中 突出的是友谊。暗示只要团结起来, 就能和一切敌人抗衡。对于 新独立的第三世界国家, 我们欢迎加入到自由国家的行列, 并保 证一种殖民统治的结束决不会被另一种更加残暴的统治所替代 (To tho se new states w hom w e w elcome to the rank s of the

free,w e p ledge our wo rd that one fo rm of co lonial cont ro l shall no t have passed aw ay merely to be rep laced by a far mo re iron tyranny ) 对生活在亚洲和非洲里的贫困的人民, 我们将尽最 大努力帮助他们摆脱贫困的枷锁(To tho se peop le in the huts and villages of half the globe st ruggling to break the bonds of mass m isery, w e p ledge our best effo rts to help them help

11、圣经语言的风格

在这篇演讲中出现大量的圣经语言的格式, 可能与肯尼迪 信仰天主教有关, 也许他认为这样的语言风格能增添演讲的庄 严和号召力, 如:

全文的结束段中也包含了圣经的语言风格, 他不仅号召美

国人民, 而且号召全世界人民共同作出牺牲, 为共同的目标而奋 斗。

另外就是引用圣经中的词语, 如: L et bo th sides unite to heed, in all co rners of the earth, the command of Isaiah —— to “undo the heavy burdens, and ( to) let the opp ressed go free. 这 一段中的引语就出自圣经第58 章第6 节:“Is no t th is the fast that I have cho sen? To loo se the bands of w ickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the opp ressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”

他的结尾铿锵有力, 很有感召力同时也说明了他对事业的 追求, 对国家的挚爱和对宗教的虔诚。他说:

W ith a good conscience our only sure rew ard,w ith h isto ry the final judge of our deeds, let us go fo rth to lead the land w e love, ask ing H is blessing and H is help, but know ing that here on earth God’s wo rk must t ruly be our ow n.
