A: he?s a year older than Keith, but he looks younger. B: how?s your father?

A: he?s fine. He retired last week. It?s turning poing in his life. Now he can relax and enjoy his retirement.

B: he can spend more time with his grandchilder.

A: oh, I don?t think he wants to. He wants to travel to several different countries around the world. B: so, he wants to have a more active retirement. Good idea! A: how do you want to spend your old age? B: in the same way, probably.

Intermediate

A: what?s the life expectancy in your country?

B: I?m not sure, but probably about 75 years. How about in your country?

A: about 70, I think. This newspaper article talks about the problems of an aging population. It?s a problem that will soon affect most of the world.

B: I heard that the government might need to increase the retirement age, because otherwise there will not be enough workers to support the young and the elderly.

A: perhaps we need to have more babies! Tina gave birth to a baby boy yesterday.

B: did she? That?s great. However, if we have too many children, that will have a bad effect on the enviroment.

A: how?s your son these days?

B: oh, he?s fine. Kids seem to grow up very quickly nowadays.

A: he?ll be a teenager before you know it! Teenagers are often rebellious! When do you mine it is a good age to have a child?

B: I had mine when I was 24. that?s a little young. I?d suggest you wait until you are in your late

twenties., or even in your early thirties if you have a good career.

A: yes, I think you?re right. I?m thinking about having a child, but not just yet. B: is there a big generation gap between parents and their children in you country?

A; Yes, there is. Teenagers do not want to live traditonal lives. They want to go out, have fun, and explore the world. They want to develop their own view of life. Parents usually try to discourage them, but they don?t often succeed.

B:parents usually give their children more freedom in my country. Sometimes they give them too much freedom.

A: it?s almost impossible to get the right balance. If you are too strict, kids might ignore you. If you are too lenient, they might go wild. Words

A: do you like Barry?

B: no, not very much. He?s too ambitious and dishonest. A: I agree. I like his brother, Paul. They are not alike.

B: yes. They are completely different. Paul is very sociable and much more honest than his brother. A: what kind of person do you consider yourself to be? B: I think I?m polite, careful, relaxed and shy.

A: oh, I don?t think you?re shy! You are always chatting with new people when we go to a party.

2

B: well, yes, but those people always start talking to me. I never talk to them first. Perhaps I?m not as shy as I think. Anyway, you?re certainly not shy! A: You?re right. I love going out and making new friends. B: so, you?ll be at my birthday party on Friday? A: Of course!

Intermediate

A: How do you think people get their personalities? B: I think it?s mainly from the environment a person lives it. A: Don?t you think people get their personalities from their parents?

B: no, but parents control a lot of the environment that kids grow up in, so they certainly influence their kid?s personalities a lot.

A: So why do you think many kids have personalities that are so different to their parents. B: maybe when they become teenagers, they want to be completely different to their parents. A: You might be right. I guess most parents want their kids to be like them, but kids today grow up in a different environment. You know, they know much more about the world from the internet, newspapers, and tv.

B: do you think that teenagers get a lot of their bad behaviour from tv and movies?

A: Maybe some of it. I think a lot of people blame TV and movies when the real problem is that the parents aren?t bringing their child up correctly.

B: Parents have a difficult job. They have to bring up their children and usually have to work too. A: Yes, that?s fine. Your son is doing well at school, isn?t he?

B: yes, he is. He?s very hardworking when he?s at school. Then he comes home from school and does homework before dinner. After dinner, he goes out with his friends.

A: So, he?s not a bookworm? It?s good that he has an outgoing personality. Some kids are very quiet and introverted. You wonder they?ll survive in the real world without their parents to support them. words

A; I?ve got a question for you. Which part of body do you find most attractive.

A: when you are in a restaurant you want the waiter to bring the bill, what do you do to attract his attention?

B: I just make eye contact with him and nod my head. Then I tell him when he comes over to the table. Why do you ask?

A: I went out with my girlfriend to a nice restaurant last night and I noticed that many people shouted for the bill.

B: that seems a little impolite in such a restaurant.

A: that?s what I thought. I just thought I?d ask you and see what you thought of it. Anyway, what did you do yesterday evening?

B: well, it was a warm evening, so I stretched my legs. I walked along the canal for a couple of miles. Actually, several other people had the same idea. I saw bill. A: did you? How is he these days?

B: sure. If you want to stretch your legs, a good exercise is to lift your knee in front of your body,

7

like this. It?s a very simple exercise, but very effective. A: I need to excise my arms too. How can I do that?

B: one good way is to do push-ups. Another way is to use weights. Make sure you grip the weights firmly. You don?t want to drop them on your feet!

A: when I do push-ups, should I bend my elbows so that my nose touches the ground?

B: you don?t need to bend your elbows that much. Bend them so that your arms are at a 90 degree angle. The most important think is to remember to keep your body straight. Many people bend their bodies at the waist, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise. A: what?s a good exercise for my chest muscles?

B: one that I recommend is that you lie on your back. You should have a weight in each hand and stretch your arms out side of your body. A: so I need plenty of space for this exercise.

A: can you give me a hand with some things in the kitchen? I don?t think I can finish everything in time.

B: ok, what do you want me to do?

A: first of all, I need you to do the drying up. I?m almost finished the washing up. I?m going to clean the cooker when I finish.

B: ok. I?ll put the plates and cutlery away as I dry them. Where is the tea towel? Oh, here it is. A; we?ll have this finished in no time with two if us working on it.

B: while you?re cleaning the cooker, I?ll wipe the worktop. That was a great meat, by the way. A; actually, it was just some leftovers from yesterday. I made far too much food to eat alone. I am glad you could come over to help me finish it.

B: my pleasure! This tea towel?s a little ragged. Do you have another one? A: yes. Look in that drawer. I should throw the old one out. B: keep it and use it as rag. You can clean your bicycle with it.

A: so, what?s new in the kitchen? That refrigerator is new, isn?t it?

B: yes. I needed a large one. Before, I had a separate refrigerator and freezer, but this has both combined into one.

A: That?s usual nowadays. You?ve added a few shelves too.

B: yes. You know I?ve been cooking more kind of food recently and I needed some extra space for spices and ingredients.

A: Did you buy new cupboards too?

B: no, I didn?t. I gave them a really good clean, so they just look new. The worktop was in poor condition, so I had a new one added.

20

B: of course. Please sit down. How many I help you?

A; I bought a house recently and would like to insure it and its content.

B: I see. Here?s a pamphlet about our home insurance policy. We?ve named our policy ”umbrella”. May I ask how much you paid for your home and where you live? These are the two main thing that decide how much your premiums are.

A: I understand. I live in the Oakfield area and paid $100,000 for my home.

B: let me just check that on my computer. Oaksfield is a low risk area, so your premiums will probably be around $100 a month. The other thing to take into account is deductibles.

A: in this pamphlet it says that the minimum amount for deductibles is $2000. what does that mean exactly?

B: it means That the first $2000 of any claim you make must be paid by you. The insurance policy covers any amount above that, up to the agreed limit.

A: oh, I see. That?s fine. What is the advantage of having higher deductibles?

B; If you have higher deductibles, your premium are lower, because you will pay more of the claim and we will pay less.

A: it seems that I should do some calculations before deciding. I presume that the insurance period can be for as long as we aggress.

B: we initially sign one-year policies with our policyholders. These are renewable after the first year.

A; if I have a claim, how long does it take to make a settlement? I?ve heard that with some insurance companies, it can take monthes.

B; that is of great concern to out clients. We aim to satisfy all claims within a month, but we can?t guarantee that.
