World Tour Hong Kong Unit 1 B4
Good morning, everyone! My name is Mei Ling. You’re going to visit some of the most exciting cities in the world. I’m going to be your guide on this first stop. Welcome to the island city of Hong Kong!
Hong Kong is one of the world’s largest banking and trade centers. It’s also one of the most crowded cities in the world. Just look at the traffic! The streets are filled with vehicles of all kinds---buses, taxis, cars, vans, scooters, and bicycles. But here on our tour bus we don’t have to worry about the traffic. Just sit back and enjoy the view. We’re in the heart of the city. There isn’t much room on the island, but Hong Kong has a surprising number of parks. We’re passing a park now. Look at the people flying kites. Which one do you think is the most beautiful?
If we’re lucky, we might see some actors filming a movie. Have you ever seen a kung fu movie? Well, it was probably made right here in Hong Kong.
Now we’ll take a ferry so that you can get a view of the city from the harbor. Look across the water at the skyscrapers. Those tall buildings hold some of the most expensive offices in the world. On an island the only way to grow is up!
The ferries are a great way to avoid some of the traffic. But as you can see, the harbor is also crowded with boats and ships of many kinds. You can see the Chinese junks. Most of these are fishing boats. Housing is very expensive on the island, so many people live on their junks. If you look carefully, you might be able to see the families cooking, washing, and taking care of the children. Some of the junks are quite roomy.
You can see huge container ships, carrying cargo to other parts of the world. Hong Kong is a free port. You can find everything here.
In Hong Kong, East meets West. Both English and Chinese are official languages here. Hong Kong is a British Colony, but in 1997 Hong Kong will again become a part of China. We’re all very busy planning for that day. I hope that you all enjoyed your day in Hong Kong.
World Tour Sydney Unit2 B4
Good day! Welcome to Sydney, Australia. My name is Peter Barnes. I’ll be your guide as we visit Sydney, the second stop on your tour of some of the world’s great cities. Sydney is one of the major ports in Australia, and we are going to begin our tour right here in Sydney Harbor. We’ve just crossed Sydney Harbor Bridge--- one of the longest of its type in the world.
Look out in the harbor. You can see Sydney’s Opera House. Later this evening we’ll be going there for a performance. This superb building is the most famous sight in Sydney. As you can see, there’s water on three sides of the Opera House. It looks like shells sitting there by the water, doesn’t it?
Speaking of shells, maybe later you’d like to try some of our famous oysters and seafood. Or perhaps you’d rather have some goods Australian mutton. That’s sheep, you know. Australia has huge sheep ranches in the interior of the country, and it’s the world’s largest producer of mutton and wool. Much of the wool is shipped out of Sydney Harbor.
You’ve probably heard of some of the interesting wild animals here in Australia. We have koala bears and kangaroos. We don’t usually see them in the city, but you can see lots of them out in the parks.
Now we’re going to head for the beaches. Nearly every street has a view of the water. We love the water here. Sydney is famous for its water sports. You can go sailing, swimming, surfing, scuba diving…the list goes on and on.
In fact, people say that we’re a little crazy over sports here in Sydney. I guess maybe you are. We love soccer and rugby, and we have our own Australian football. We think it’s much more exciting than American football!
Well, here we are back at the Opera House for this evening’s entertainment. I hear that the opera is magnificent. Enjoy yourselves!
World Tour Tokyo Unit 3 B4
Good evening, everyone. Welcome to your tour of Tokyo by night. My name is Mariko Ozawa. I’ll be your tour guide for the evening. I hope to make your evening very enjoyable.
We’ll begin our tour here in the Ginza. This is the most famous part of Tokyo. This is where you can find many of the biggest hotels, restaurants, and stores.
As you can see, everything is lit up with the bright colors of neon lights. All of the colors of the rainbow---red, purple, blue, green, yellow---flashing on and off, spelling out words, making pictures. What a sight! It’s very colorful, isn’t it?
Did you know that Tokyo is one of the safest cities in the world? It’s one of the largest cities, but we can safely walk down the street even at night.
You can look in the windows of some of the restaurants to see what they serve. I think the food tastes as good as it looks! Do you want to try some sushi?
As you can see, most of the people are wearing Western clothing. Most of us don’t wear kimonos. Kimonos are very expensive. But we’re going to a place where you can see beautiful costumes.
We’re going to a Kabuki theater. Kabuki is a type of play that is hundreds of years old. Kabuki includes acting, singing, and dancing. Men play all of the parts. The actors perform brilliantly, and the costumes are very elegant. I’m certain that you’ll enjoy the play.
In the morning, we’ll visit the Imperial Palace. That’s the home of the Japanese Emperor. The Palace is very old and beautiful. There are many wonderful gardens around the palace.
Japanese gardens are filled with flowers and special trees. In the spring the smell of cherry blossoms fills the air. What a wonderful smell it is! Well, see you in the morning. I hope you have a good night’s rest.
World Tour Beijing Unit 4 B4
Welcome to Beijing, the capital of China. My name is Han Cho. I’ll be your guide during your stay in the capital.
I hope you enjoyed your visit to the Great Wall yesterday. Did you know that the Great Wall is one of the largest structures ever built? It’s about 4000 miles long. and it was built more than 2000 years ago.
Beijing is also very large and very old. Did you know that Beijing has been the Capital of China for almost 800 years? There’s a lot to see, so let’s get started.
We’ll be.g.in our tour in the oldest part of the city. In the middle of the city of Beijing are two very old walled cities. These are the Imperial City and the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City is inside the walls of the Imperial City. The Chinese emperor lived in the Forbidden City. Of course, there is no emperor now. Today the Imperial Palaces are museums.
Do you have your maps? You can look at mine if you want. It’s easy to read a map of Beijing. In the center of Beijing everything lines up from north to south. You can imagine a line that runs through the Forbidden City and the Imperial City. All of the streets, walls, gates, and religious buildings follow this imaginary line.
Look out over the city. You can see the roofs of the old buildings and temples. They’re very beautiful, aren’t they?
Many people ride bicycles. As you can see., the streets of modern Beijing are wide, and many of the buildings are quite large. The biggest building in the city is the Great Hall of the People. This building is two blocks long. Imagine how many people can fit inside.
Here we are at the Beijing Zoo. Everyone loves to watch the pandas.
Now we are going to visit the Beijing Markets. These markets have a very long history. In the markets, you will find many new fruits and vegetables. You can buy delicious Chinese foods. What wonderful smells! You can also listen to musicians and storytellers. People like to come to the market to sit and visit with friends. Would you like to sit and have some tea?
World Tour Mexico Unit 5 B4
Good morning! Welcome to Mexico City. My name is Ernesto Garcia, and I’ll be showing you around the capital of Mexico.
Mexico City is almost a mile high. You can see the mountains around us. The temperature is very nice, isn’t it? The climate is mild, and the weather is good here all year around.
You can see that the city is very crowded. There are many cars and buses. Mexico City is one of the largest and fastest growing cities in the world. Thousands of people move into the city every day. They come from the small towns and villages.
You can see the mix of Spanish and Indian cultures everywhere that you look. Mexico City was built on the site of an ancient Aztec city. Here at the university you’ll see many examples of the mural art that is known all over the world. Many of these murals were done by the Mexican artist Diego Rivera. These buildings with their colorful designs give you a real sense of the “flavor” of Mexico.
We’re now going to visit the National Museum of Anthropology. This collection is one of the best in the world. The people of Mexico are very proud of their Indian heritage.
There are many beautiful parks and gardens. Here we are at Chapultepec. This is the largest park in the city. The climate allows us to grow things all year. You can see the flowers growing in the gardens of all the houses that we pass.
Tomorrow we’ll visit the famous floating gardens. They were here before the Spaniards came, too.
We’re now going to visit one of the many markets here in Mexico City. You might want to buy some things in the market. Maybe you’d like to buy a leather purse or some boots. Or maybe you’d like a brightly colored cotton dress or shirt, or some beautiful silver jewelry.
Then we can have some lunch at one of the small restaurants near the market. I’m sure you can’t wait to try some of our wonderful Mexican food. Are you hungry? I am!
World Tour Rio de Janeiro Unit 6 B4
Good morning! Welcome to Rio de Janeiro. My name is Joachim Cruz, and I'll be your tour guide. I hope you like to have fun as much as I do. In Rio we love to have fun and this is Carnival!
Sugarloaf Mountain is the most famous sight in Rio. The mountain is visible everywhere in the city. Do you think it looks like a loaf of sugar? I think it looks more like a loaf of bread, but Sugarloaf is probably a nicer name. We can ride all the way up to the top. What a view! As you can see, there are hills and mountains all around the city. Many of the people live high up on these hills. Look at the white, sandy beaches.
Now we're in the Center of Rio. For many years, Rio was the capital of Brazil. As you can see, there are a lot of tall skyscrapers. The major banks and stores are located here in the Center, along with many of Brazil's largest companies. Many of these
companies decided to stay in Rio when the capital was moved to Brasilia.
Now we're at the National Museum. You'll see a lot of interesting exhibits about the Indians of Brazil. There are many different Indian tribes in the Amazon. It's difficult to visit them in the Amazon, but you can learn about them at this museum and at the Indian Museum.
Over there you can see our Municipal Stadium. The stadium holds 200,000 people. That's a lot of soccer fans, isn't it. We Brazilians love our soccer!
During Carnival, people dress in strange masks and costumes. Look at the colors! People can dress up as anything they want to. Listen to the music! That's the rhythm of the samba. During Carnival, the parades and parties go on day and night.
Now we're in the part of the city that's called Copacabana. Have you heard of it before? Maybe you've heard of Ipanema, too. There are many large houses here. We're close to the beaches. Look at the orchids and hibiscus in the gardens; there are flowers everywhere.
We've arrived at one of the beaches now. Let's spend a few hours here. Enjoy the sand and sun, but don't get a sunburn. We have a lot to do tonight!
