For many years, Hawaii has been a magic name to people who like to travel. People on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, in Japan and in America, dream of seeing these beautiful islands in the middle of a sunset over the ocean. In the tropical(热带的) lands, the sun drops, like a ball of golden fire into

- 2 -

the sea, and it drops so quickly that you can almost not see it move. The sun leaves behind a glow(光) that lights the skies and shines in the quiet water.

People often have a quiet, peaceful time ----perfect for a leisurely(悠闲地) walk along the water. This scene is not too different from the dramatic beauty that greeted the first strangers to these islands centuries ago. They were Polynesian people who came from Tahiti in canoes(独木舟), not much bigger than small boats.

They found the beautiful white sand beaches and the waving palm trees, but there were no giant hotels like the ones we see nowadays. The first people came to Hawaii nearly two thousand years ago, but skyscraper hotels were only built in the last 25 years. Now jet planes make it possible to fly to Hawaii for a weekend from Tokyo or San Francisco or Los Angeles. Wherever the people come from, they really want to see the original(原始的) beauty of Hawaii. They want to see the lovely beaches and the mountain called Diamond Head which is almost hidden by the tall hotels. 21. Hawaii is a name ___________________. A. given by people who like to travel B. attracting a lot of travelers C. with a magic story behind it

D. liked by both the Japanese and Americans

D. it isn’t easy to see the original beauty because things have completely changed in the last 25 B

After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live. One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.

The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by

another sudden shock.

October 15th is the Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap. For example, donors(捐赠者)will give 150,000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia.

Experts say people around the world wash their hands every day, but very few use soap at so-called important moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.

Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap. Partners include the United Nations Children’s Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and Procter and Gamble. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germ(细菌). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub(揉搓) it into all areas, including under the fingernails(指甲). Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.

The Partnership for Handwashing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Handwashing also says washing with soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine(疫苗)or medicine. Hand washing could also prevent the spread of other diseases. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect(感染)themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others.

28. What’s the best title for this passage?

A. Say no to washing hands in the wrong way.

B. Find out why washing hands carefully is so important. C. Want to live a longer life?-wash your hands.

B. why washing hand with soap is so important C. the dangers of washing hands without soap

D. when we should especially wash our hands with soap

31. In which part of newspaper would you most probably read this passage?

Spring will soon be upon us and a new term is here. All over the world spring is the season of new life: flowers bloom, baby animals are born, and the weather becomes warmer. During this time of year, people usually walk around with a spring in their steps and a feeling of fresh beginnings. However, for a fresh beginning it takes more than the bright colors and fresh air of spring. We need to look at ourselves, set new goals, and decide how to improve ourselves.

In England people usually do this on the first day of the year. We look at the past year and think about what we’d like to change or improve in our lives, and we call this a New Year’s resolution. These can be anything from improving one’s health through exercise or cutting out bad habits, to studying harder for better grades or trying to find a good work/life balance.

Luckily, we don’t have to wait for the beginning of a new year to try and become better people. We can do this whenever we like. The milestone of a new term is just a good place to start.

Sometimes it’s difficult to take the first step in achieving newly set goals, but an old saying is \can seem daunting at first, but once we begin, they get easier. For example, spending less time on QQ or playing video games and more time studying or communicating face-to-face can be difficult habits to change at first. But once we settle into the new routine(例行常态)and start to see the results, it’s difficult not to wonder why we didn’t do it sooner.

The trick with deciding on a resolution for a new term is not to set unrealistic targets. If we do this, it's easy to lose motivation (动力) because the end goal seems so far away. Try to make many small targets you want to reach on the way to your final goal. This way, you can see your progress easily.

32. In Paragraph one, the author wants to tell us that spring is a time . A. to take a walk around outdoors B. to enjoy fresh air and bright colors C. to set goals for a fresh beginning D. for animals to have babies 33. A New Year's resolution is .

A. a decision made to improve ourselves B. a ceremony to celebrate New Year C. a promise made to your parents D. a recall of what happened last year 34. Which of the following might the writer agree with according to Paragraph Four? A. Be swift to hear, slow to speak. B. All that ends well is well. C. Well begun is half done. D. All roads lead to Rome. 35. What does the underlined word \ A. changeable B. difficult C. lovely D. confusing
