This meeting, which we hope is the first of many discussions between US and Chinese government and business officials, is a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss areas of cooperation in the fields of energy and the environment, the two biggest challenges facing our countries in the 21st century.

Along with the iconic imagery of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall, the city also offers an endless mixture of theatres, museums, discos, all kinds of restaurants and shopping malls which will amaze you and delight you.

If we have time, perhaps we can talk a bit more later about the degree of our openness. Just today, GE has bought Wood, which is one of the most important manufacturers in its niche in oilfield services sector. Just very day there is a story of this kind, which is not a good or a bad thing, but it differentiates us sharply from Germany and to some degree from France.

51． I think the biggest challenge for SMEs is lack of resource in the broader sense: both

money and number of hours in the day. SME business owners tend to be pulled in multiple directions. And that is the biggest challenge in the context of China, because it is a long way away; it costs a great deal of money to develop the market. You do need to build those relationships that were mentioned earlier, and that requires a huge amount of investment, both timewise and capitalwise. But there are good opportunities. 我想，从大的方面来说，中小企业面临的最大挑战就是缺乏资源：资金和时间。中小企业主实际上受到多方面的牵掣。而这正是在中国开展业务最大的挑战，因为它离我们太近，因此

US-China relations than the business sector. And so I’m very pleased that we have some of America’s top businesses here. Many of them have a longstanding relationship with China; have been selling American goods, promoting American services in China. And they, I think, can testify to the benefits that the United States obtains from strong relations with China.
