There’s bad news for the parents of Chinese boys. After 2020, when teenage boys enter their 20s, at least 10 percent of them will find it difficult to marry a wife.
According to the sixth national census (人口普查), there are already
337.6 million more males than females in China. The sex ratio (性别比) at
birth is as high as 115.9:100. this means that there are 115.9 baby boys for every 100 baby girls. The ratio is
still growing and is said to be 118.9:100 by 2020.
According to the UN, there are only 21 nations or areas that have more women than men. Russia is one of them because many males died in World War II. Since then there have been more women than men in Russia. However, most countries, including China, have more males. Elizabeth J. Remick, a professor from Tufts University in the US, explained the reasons. Men tend to make more money than women. The economic gap (经济差距) between genders results in a cultural tradition of preferring boys to girls.
Gender imbalances (失衡) can lead to an unsafe society. With every 1 percent increase in the sex ratio, there would be 6 percent more violent crimes (暴力犯罪), according to an economist’s report.
To change the situation, kids need to be better educated on gender equality (平等), experts suggest. But they also warn that there’s a lot more work to do.
