PART II LISTENING COMPREHENSION SECTION A CONVERSATIONS

In this section you will hear several conversations. Listen to the conversations carefully and then answer the questions that follow.Questions 1 to 3 are based on the following conversation. At the end of the conversation, you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions. Now, listen to the conversation.

1. The Ethical Consumer Research Association will provide information to shoppers on _____.

A. product price B. product quality C. manufacturers D. production methods TIP:选C。从“Well, like letting shoppers know what the companies are doing behind the products they see on the store shelves”可以看出,该协会是为消费者提供生产者的相关信息。

2. According to the conversation, an ethical shopper should _____.

A. ask for others? advice before buying things B. consider the worth of something to

be bought

C. postpone buying things whenever possible D. search for things that are less costly TIP:选B。从“Well, you see, sometimes we buy a lot more than we need. We buy more items of clothing than we need. So being an ethical shopper really means thinking a bit before you go and spend your money in the shops”可知,理智的消费者在购买商品之前应该多想一想,多考虑是否值得购买。

3. According to the conversation, ethical shoppers can be best described as _____. A. shrewd B. thrifty C. extravagant D. cautious

TIP:选B。主要区分B和D。Thrifty: using money carefully and wisely的意思,符合题意;cautious: careful to avoid danger or risks,用在此处不如B准确,但可以说cautious in spending money。

SCRIPT:

Man: Ruth, do you know something about the Ethical Consumer Research Association?

Woman: Yes, so far as I know, it?s an organization that provides information for shoppers.

Man: Oh, what kind of information?

Woman: Well, like letting shoppers know what the companies are doing behind the products they see on the store shelves. And, and the shoppers are concerned with some ethical issues. Man: For example?

Woman: Well, they may want to know that the product they are buying hasn?t been made at the expense of people who are producing it, whether it?s in this country or abroad. They might also be concerned with other kinds of issues, for example, whether the company is involved in selling arms.

Man: But how can one become an ethical shopper when buying things?

Woman: One way of thinking about ethical shopping is thinking about buying less. Man: Oh, how?

Woman: Well, you see, sometimes we buy a lot more than we need. We buy more items of clothing than we need. So being an ethical shopper really means thinking a bit before you go and spend your money in the shops. Man: Could you give me some advice?

Woman: You see, something may cost a bit more in the short run but be worth it in the long run. So if you are paying for quality, something will last you longer and then save you money. Man: Mm ...

Woman: And, sometimes you can buy things second-hand. And the quality in most second-hand shops is really very good these days. So it?s about thinking before you shop.

Man: Ruth, thanks for your advice. Woman: Pleasure.

Man: Now which course are you doing?

Woman: I?m doing management studies with English and German. Man: U-huh, how?s it all going?

Woman: Well, it?s not going too well. I?m not really enjoying the course, and, well, I?m not very happy.

Man: All right, let?s take things slowly. Tell me something about the course.

Woman: Well, huh, there?s just so much work. I thought that to do two languages with management studies will be very useful. But I find the management course very difficult sometimes, and then to study English and German too. It means I?m working all the time. And I never have time to relax.

Man: What about your accommodation? Are you happy with that?

Woman: Not really. I mean the other students on my course are living in the student dormitory. So they see each other all the time. I?m living in a rented room in a family house. I eat breakfast and dinner with the family. But I get lonely in the evenings and

at weekends.

Man: So, making friends is a problem, too. Woman: Yes.

Man: OK, I?m going to make two suggestions. Woman: All right.

Man: First, which of the two languages do you enjoy most? Woman: English. I find it easier, too.

Man: So I?d like you to go and see your German tutor and say that you are going to stop attending German classes for the moment. Woman: OK.

Man: Next, I think you should go to each of the five-student dormitories. Choose the one you like best and ask if you can move in there. Students are always moving in and out, so there shouldn?t be a problem. Woman: Thanks a lot for your advice.

Man: You know, today is a very special day. That?s the 20th anniversary of the World Wide Web.

Woman: Ah, the World Wide Web. It?s really changed our lives. And, and in such a short space of time!

Man: Mm, definitely. Now do you know on average how long does someone spend surfing the Net each day?

Woman: Umm, honestly I don?t know. But I guess people must spend a lot of time on

things like Facebook. Man: Mm, that?s true.

Woman: And I?m sure almost everyone uses the Internet now. But I wonder how we cope without it.

Man: Well, it might be a bit difficult without it.

Woman: I guess so. For instance, some people need it for social relationships.

Man: Yes, especially those who are far away. Keeping in contact with friends and family would be impossible without the Internet.

Woman: But are there people who would cope without the Internet? Man: Yes, there are. These people have some alternatives. Woman: What kind?

Man: For example, we could write to each other like we used to before we have the Internet. It would be lovely to get more handwritten letters from friends and family rather than just e-mails, I think.

Woman: That?s what we call “snail mail”. But of course, lots more people would mean that we need bigger file cabinets.

Man: Yes. Well, it?s still incredible how the World Wide Web has expanded in twenty years and how much we now rely on it. I wonder what it would be like after another twenty years.

Woman: Well, for better or worse, the Web will have greater impact on our life and society.
