Charles Dickens and his Oliver Twist
I was still a primary school child when I first read the Oliver Twist . After so many years ,I met it again in a college class .When I was watching the film Oliver Twist on screen ,I was shocked by myself that I can still remember the novel’s plot so clearly.
Charles Dickens is not totally a stranger to me ,I constantly get in touch with this name form other novels, my literature class and even my news textbook.
Charles John Huffam Dickens (pronounced February 1812 –June 1870) was the most popular British novelist of the Victorian era. He was boor in poverty, and his father was sent to prison because of his heavy debt when he was 12. Then he worked in a law officer as a little staff member. This experience made great effect on his later writing life. After that he became a journalist and started writing novels.
As an great representative of English critical realism, most of his book was based on the daily life and to reflect the real society. In his works , we see a miserable world ,but we know that is the real world.
He wrote Oliver Twist in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who suffered hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. What’s more, it is an era where people tend to attach more importance to money and self benefit but show less sympathy to those who are in trouble. People seemed to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people's honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. But though the story ,thanks to Oliver Twist , I have seen the strong power of a person’s nature of goodness. He struggled to rise above his criminal companion’s level and never loose hope. That is how can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction could remain pure in body and mind. And that is the power which could remaking the shape of the world in the future, I fully believe it.
The novel is a masterpiece ,and the movie which based on the 0riginal seems great too.
That is all about what I’m going to say about Charles Dickens and his Oliver Twist.
