Unit 1

Not a year after my mother’s death , the following summer , my father brought me along to pick up(接) a guest(客人) . Her name was Amana . She was coming to visit from out of town(城外) . She was a big , beautiful , middle-aged black woman who was a singer . She had other talents as well . These talents reached beyond compare . Amana had one of the sweetest expressions I had ever seen . I did not know many black people at that age though I had not been raised as a racist in the least . And there were no black kids at the schools I had attended . We picked up at the San Francisco airport . When we reached our car , my dad motioned(向某人示意) for me to get into the backseat .

“Come and sit in the front . There’s plenty of room here , and you may sit right in the middle,”Amana said . I smiled and without looking my father for approval (赞成)I got in and moved quickly to the middle of the huge white leather seats . “There , that’s better , ” she said as she sat down beside me .

We drove up to North Beach to a seafood place . The three of us sat there and talked . We had the most enormous(巨大的)lobster(龙虾)feast(饱尝珍馐)you could ever imagine . There lobsters were so big that just the meat in their claws was enough to make a meal . I was glad that I was quite hungry when I walked in . Amana too was surprised at the feast . As for my father , he was happy to hear the compliments(赞扬)we were giving him for finding such a place and taking us to dinner ther . It was a dinner I will always

remember , because of the wonderful food and Amana , who was as interested in speaking with me as she was in talking with my father . What’s more , my father was in a better mood (心情)than I had seen him in some time . That night we drove south , back to Pebble Beach . Amana was going to be our house guest I discovered , much to my excitement . When we arrived home , I helped our guest with her bags and showed her my sister’s old room . It is right next to mine . This was where dad said my she would be staying . The room was once for my sister Sheryn and since she had moved away it was the one most used for house guests now . Though I usually had more energy than there was time in the day to expend it on(靠近) , I bid my new friend good night and she gave a big hug and kiss.

Unit 2

Different countries have different cultures, which cause some misunderstanding. Here is just one example of it. In many countries, people will tell you what they think you want to hear, whether or not it is realistic . To them, this is the polite thing to do. To Americans, though, it is considered confusing(困惑的), even dishonest , to avoid telling the true facts. Even when avoiding the truth is done only to be polite, it makes no difference. In America, this would still be considered the wrong thing to do. It is helpful to remember that different cultures consider some matters more important than others. For Americans, trust and truth are most important. One of the worst things that can be said about someone in America is that “you cannot trust him.”

Considering such differences in values(价值观) among the many cultures of the world, we come to know a certain truth. We realize it is natural that

misunderstandings will occur “How far is it to the next town?” an American traveler asks a man standing by the edge a road. (站在路边的)In some countries, a man may realize the traveler is tired and eager to reach the next village. Therefore, he will politely say, “Just down the road.” He thinks this is more encouraging , gentler, and therefore the answer the traveler wants to hear. So the American drives alone for many more hours before he comes to the village. The traveler is angry, feeling tricked . He thinks that the man has purposely(故意的) lied to him. The man must have known quite well what the distance was, the American traveler thinks.

If a visitor to the United States asked an American standing at the edge of a road how far the next town was, the American would think it dishonest if he said it was near when he knew it was actually 24 miles away. While he, too, would be sympathetic with the tired traveler, he would say, “You have a long way to go yet; it is at least 24 miles more.” The traveler might be disappointed, but he would know what to suppose .In this case, there would be no misunderstanding.

Unit 3

Business schools are forever fine- tuning(调整) their brands(牌子) . Some emphasize(强调) strategy , others technology or skills

But the new president of Boston College's Carroll School of Management, long known for finance(金融) and accounting, has something else in mind(脑中的想法). He wants to build Carroll's business school program around concepts that could prove less profitable(有利可图的) though more

enduring(经久不衰的). Those concepts are ethics(道德的) and values. In a vision(想象力) document and get-to–know-you(相互了解的) meeting with faculty members, Andrew Boynton, who arrived in January, has spoken a great deal about the \spirit. His ambition is to equip students with motivation(动机) and compassion(同情). In turn(依次), they will use these to serve others. I don't want this Carroll School to be the Carroll School of Money,\interview. \ titles either. It has to be more about leading a worhwhile life. Otherwise , I see little reason for it to exist.(几乎没有理由存在的)

Boynton, 49, attended Carroll as a gradute . He has returned to take the leadership of a school that had been without a permanent(永久的)

president for the last year and a half. His challenge is to lead Carroll in a more

competitive business school environment. Currently , Carroll is overshadowed(使失色的) by Harvard Business School and MIT's Sloan School of

Management. It is also facing the challenge of promoting(促成,发扬) a business education in a world where mistrust (不信任的)of corporation(社团) is high.

\ exemplify(例示) character and values. These

distinguish (区别)Boston College and its Jesuit mission. And they must come to be a part of Carroll as well,\circulated(传阅) among Carroll faculty. \difference. They will earn leadership roles in organizations that add value to society far beyond shareholder(股东) value.

Unit 4

Most worthwhile careers require some kind of specialized(专门的) training . Ideally(观念上的), the choice of an occupation (职业)should be made even before the choice of a curriculum(课程) in high school. Actually,

however , most people make several job choices during their lives. This is partly

because of economic and industrial(工业上的) changes. Also, people want to improve their positions(工作). The “one perfect job” does not exist . Young people should therefore enter into a broad(宽阔的) flexible(灵活的) training program. This program should prepare them for different fields of work. That is(也就是说), finished with a training program, a person should be ready to do many different things, not just a single job.

It is true that many young people make career plans with the help of a (n)

competent (足够的)vocation counselor(顾问) or psychologist. Still, they know little about the occupational world or themselves for that matter . And their lack of knowledge causes them to make bad decisions.

Mostly, they choose their lifework on a hit-or-miss(无计划的) basis . Some drift(漂泊) from job to job. Others stick to work in which they are unhappy and for which they are not fitted.

One common mistake in choosing an occupation is for its real or imagined prestige(声誉). Too many high school students---or their parents---choose the professional field in this way. But this is unfortunately not always the best. The assumed(假装的) or real prestige of profession of a “white-collar”(白领) job is not necessarily a good reason for choosing it as a life’s work.

Moreover , these occupations are not always well paid. Since a large proportion(比例) of jobs are in mechanical(机械) and manual(手工) work, the majority of young people should give serious thought to these fields. They are worth great consideration .

Before making an occupational choice, a person should have a general idea of what he wants out of life and how he is willing to work to get it. Some people desire social prestige, others intellectual (聪明的)satisfaction. Some want security; others are willing to take risks for financial(金融的) gain. Each occupational choice has its demands as well as rewards . They should all be weighed (仔细考虑)carefully before a decision is made.
