Unit 3 Life in the Future ---Teaching plans

Teaching Aims:

1 To make students understand the main idea of the new unit--- unit 3, Life in the Future.

2 To arouse Ss’ interest in learning about the future life, inspire the students to imagine the future life and get much

about future world by reading the text.

3 To help students to master some basic expressions and make practice. 4 To help students integrate listening tasks with speaking and writing.

5 To develop the students’ reading ability, learn to use some reading strategies such as guessing, skimming, scanning and so on.

? Vocabulary:

1) impression(n.): an idea or opinion of what something is like

2) remind(v.): to make someone aware of something they have forgotten or might have forgotten 3) constantly(adv.): all the time, repeatedly

4) unsettled(adj.): anxious and worried; unable to relax

5) previous(adj.): happening or existing before something or someone else 6) bend(v.): to (cause to) curve

7) press(v.): to push sth. closely and firmly against sth. 8) swiftly(adv.): quickly

9) lack(n.): the state of not having sth. or not having enough of sth. 10) surroundings(n.): everything that is around sb./sth

12) capsule(n.): a small container which has a measured amount of a medicine inside and which dissolves when you swallow

13) vehicle(n.): a thing that is used for transporting people/ goods from one place to another ? Useful phrases

1) impression n. 印记;印象;感想;后接 of sb./ of sth./ on sb./ that 从句; e.g. My first impression of him was favorable. 他给我的第一印象不错。

I didn’t get the impression that they were unhappy about the situation. 我并不觉得他们不满于当时的状况。 My words made no impression on her. 我的话丝毫对她没有起作用。

→ impress v.给……留下深刻的印象;使铭记;使感动;

impress sth. on/upon sb./ impress sb. with sth. 给……留下深刻的印象;使铭记; e.g. He impressed her with his sincerity.

( = He impressed his sincerity on her.=His sincerity impressed her.) 他的真诚打动了他。

2) remind v. 提醒;使想起; (reminder n.提醒物;引起回忆的事物) → remind sb. to do sth. 提醒某人做某事;

remind sb.+(that)/wh-从句 提醒某人……;使某人想起……; remind sb. about/of sth. 使某人想起或意识到……;提醒某人某事 e.g. You remind me of your father when you say that. 你说这样的话使我想起了你的父亲。 Remind me to phone Alan before I go out.

提醒我在出去之前给艾伦打电话。

Can someone remind me what I should do next? 谁能提醒我下一步该做什么?

3) constantly adv. 始终;一直;重复不断地 (constant adj.连续发生的;不断的;重复的) e.g. The car has to be constantly maintained. 汽车必须经常保养。

4) previous adj. 先前的;以往的;(时间上)稍前的 (previously adv. 先前的;早先) e.g. Have you had previous career experience? 你过去有过工作经验吗?

I couldn't believe it when I heard the news. I had only seen him the previous day. 听到这个消息时,我不敢相信;我就在前一天还见到过他。

5) bend v.(bent, bent)弯曲;使弯曲;弯腰;弯身; → bend one's mind/efforts to sth. 致力于某事 bend sb. to sth. 迫使;说服 bend the truth 歪曲事实 e.g. It's hard to bend an iron bar. 把铁棒弄弯很不容易。

She bent her head and kissed her daughter. 她低下头吻了她的女儿。

The road bent sharply to the right. 路向右急转弯。

6) press v. 压;按;推;挤;坚持;敦促 n. 报章杂志,新闻工作者,新闻界 e.g. She pressed a handkerchief to his nose. 她用手绢捂住鼻子。

She pressed down hard on the gas pedal. 她用力踩下油门踏板。

He is still pressing her claim for compensation. 他仍坚持索赔。

The press was/were not allowed to attend the trial. 庭审谢绝新闻采访。

7) switch n. & v. 用作名词表示“开关;转换”。用作动词表示“转换”。

e.g. She made the switch from full-time to part-time work when her first child was born. 第一个孩子出生后,她就由全日工作改为非全日工作。 Press these two keys to switch between documents on screen. 按这两个键就可以在屏幕上的文件之间进行切换。 I can't work next week, will you switch with me? 下个周末我不能上班,咱俩换个班好不好?

8) lack n. 缺乏;短缺 v. 缺乏;短缺;没有;不足 (lacking adj. 缺乏;没有;匮乏;不足) e.g. a lack of food /money/skills 缺乏食物/金钱/技能 The trip was canceled through lack of interest.

因为缺乏兴趣这次旅行被取消了。

He lacks confidence. 他缺乏信心。

9) surroundings n.[pl.] 环境 (surround v. 围绕;环绕 surrounding adj. 周围的;附近的) e.g. Everyone likes to work in pleasant surroundings. 人人都喜欢在愉快的环境中工作。 →启发学生思考问题,哪些单词用作名词时常用复数形式? (key: thanks, regards, congratulations)

10) catch/gain/get sight of 发现,看出 lose sight of 看不见,忘记 lose one's sight 失明

at first sight 一见就;乍看起来 At first sight, the problem seems easy.

at (the) sight of 一看见就… At the sight of the teacher, the boy ran away. be in sight 看得见,在眼前 The island is still in sight. out of sight 看不见 Out of sight, out of mind.

11) take up

to fill or use an amount of space or time 占用(时间);占据(空间) to learn to or start to do sth 开始做(某项工作);开始从事

to accept sth. that is offered or available 接受(建议或能得到的东西) e.g. The table takes up too much room. 这张桌子太占地儿。 They have taken up golf. 他们学起打高尔夫球来了。 She took up his offer of a drink. 他请她喝一杯,她接受了。

12) sweep up 打扫;清扫;横扫;涌向;快速地抱起 e.g. He swept up the baby up into his arms. 他一把将孩子抱进怀里。 ◆ Difficult sentences

1. Worried about the journey, I was unsettled for the first few days

2. Well known for their expertise, his parents’ company named “future tours” 3. transported me safely into the future in a time capsule.

4. Confused by the new surroundings, I was hit by the lack of fresh air 5. Arriving home, he showed me into a large bright, clean room. 6. Exhausted, I slid into bed and fell fast asleep

? Grammar:(This is also the difficult point in this lesson.) 1.过去分词作定语(The past participle as the attribute) I followed him to collect a hovering carriage driven by computer. Tomorrow you will be ready for some visits organized by computer. 2.过去分词作状语(The past participle as the adverbial) Worried about the journey, I was unsettled for the first few days. Confused by the new surroundings, I was hit by the lack of fresh air. Teaching methods: 1. Fast and careful reading,

Step 1. Revision:

Ask Ss to review what they have learnt last class.

Step 2. Warming up: (PPT)

1. Show some pictures about the city of the future and ask Ss to say something about it.

Faced with so many problems, human being began to think of ways to live better. We design the city and the related aspects, which connected with the life of human being. Environment, safety, health, recreation, transportation, holiday have become focuses.

Step 3. Reading:

1. Pre-reading Activities:

(1) Predicting: try to predict based on the title/ vocabulary/ questions, etc e.g. Title--- life in the future. What do you predict about the content?

(2) Setting the scene: get some cultural and social background knowledge relevant to this unit e.g. Discussion about changes you have seen in your recent life. (3) Skimming: reading quickly to get the gist.

e.g. Let Ss read the passage quickly and find out the topics mentioned in the passage.

→Suggested words and phrases: time lag, previous time period, future tours, one thousand years in the future, adjustment, carriage, a strange-looking house, your first time travel trip Ask Ss to divide the whole passage into two parts: →Suggested Answers:

Part one: the first paragraph—general idea of “ Future Tours”. Part two: paragraph 2-11— experience of future tours. (4) Scanning: reading to locate specific information

e.g. Look at the following sentence, there are in wrong order, tell me the correct order for these sentence.

A. We were transported into the future by a comfortable time capsule.

B. I arrived a t Wang Ping’s home and everything in his house made me surprised. C.I won a travel to the year AD3005

D. I have my first try to master a hovering carriage. 2 While-reading Activities:

(1) Information transfer activities: try to use some transition devices

e.g. Ask students listen to the tape and look at some pictures about this unit (2) Reading comprehension questions: (PPT) ? Questions for literal comprehension e.g. What does “Future Tours” mean?

A It means that transported sb. Safely into the future in a time capsule. B It seems you keep getting flashbacks from your previous time period. C It means a strange-looking house. D It used to collect a hovering carriage.

1) Li Qiang was relaxed when he traveled to the year AD 3005. 2) Li Qiang suffered from “time lag” at first.

Tasks should provide the students with opportunities to relate what they have read to what they already know or what they feel. Ask Ss to make up an interview. Imagine you are going through the Time Tunnel and now it is 2050, you meet an alien on the street from outer space, please describe our life (in 2050) to him, such as the cars, the recreation, holidays, travel, garbage, shopping, space travel…. You can use the information from the text.

? Homework

1. Preview the new words and expressions of this unit.

2.(Group work)Do some research on the changes of life in the future, you can either refer to books or search the internet, and give your point of view on the information that you have got to see which changes are good or bad and give the reasons. 3.(Pair work)Suppose you were Li Qiang and now you were in the future, and your mother is in the

actual life. Make a phone call to your mother, encourage the students to try their best to imagine what will happen in the future and to describes what happens clearly.

4.Look up the important or difficult sentences and expressions that you find in the text, you may either refer to books or search the internet.
