教 学 内 容 ( 要 点 ) Unit Three A Good Heart to Lean On Text A 1st period and 2nd period: Teaching Objectives: 1) Students learn the new words and phrases in Text A; 2) Students know some background knowledge in the passage; 3) Students catch the main idea of the passage. Teaching Contents: 1. New words and phrases 1) lean ? She was leaning against a tree in the park, reading a book. ? He leant forward to hear what the little girl said. ? They always lean on us when they are in trouble. 2) balance ? Her friend?s death disturbed the balance of her mind. ? I found it hard to keep my balance on the icy path/surface. sense of balance ? Riding a bike can help develop a child?s sense of balance. ? He is balancing a cup on his head. ? You must learn to balance when you learn to ride a bike. ? Before you decide to work at home, you must balance the advantages of telecommuting against its disadvantages. 3) severe ? His head injuries were quite severe. ? Don?t be too severe on him. ? She had a severe look on her face. ? The bad harvests led to severe food shortage. 4) bother ? His old injury still bothers him from time to time. ? Don?t bother with/about it. ? Don?t bother helping/ to help her on my account. 5) coordinate ? We must coordinate our efforts to help people who are affected by the flood. ? The plan was not very well coordinated, so it failed. 6)halt ? The train halted and had to wait for hours while people worked to repair the line. ? The bus came to a halt suddenly to prevent an accident. 7) impatient ? A teacher should not be impatient with slow learners. ? He is impatient for his dinner. ? He is impatient to leave. 8) pace ? Many people were complaining about fast pace of modern life. ? The company decided to slow down the pace of new product development. ? He paced back and forth as he was thinking how to solve the problem. 2. Pre-reading Tasks: Students listen to the recording and do the pre-reading task on page 2 of their book. 3. Background knowledge Manhattan is an island in New York Bay at the mouth of the Hudson River. It?s one of the five boroughs that comprise the City of New York. It is also New York City?s business and cultural center. Manhattan is connected by bridges and tunnels to New Jersey to the west, and three New York City boroughs, the Bronx to the northeast and Brooklyn and Queens on Long Island to the east and south. Part I (Paras.1-4) Flashbacks about what the writer can recall of his father Para.1 the endurance of embarrassment Para.2 setting a standard for him to adjust to and follow Para.3 being hard-working Para.4 having self-discipline ? Part II (Paras. 5-6) The writer’s own comments Para.5 The writer feels amazed at the courage for his father to subject himself to such shame and stress, without any complaint. Para.6 Another example to show his father?s good heart. ? Part III (Paras. 7-10) The writer’s own reflections on what a “good heart” is and more examples Para.7 The writer?s own reflections on what a “good heart” means. More examples follow in the upcoming 3 paragraphs. Para.8 Despite his disability, his father engaged in many activities through his own efforts. Paras.9-10 What his father did when a fight broke out at a beach party, one more example of a “good heart”. ? Part IV (Paras. 11-13) The writer’s own comments and reflections Para.11 The writer recalls his father?s pride in him. His father was living through his experience. Para.12 contrast his father?s “good heart” with his own “bad” heart. Para.13 conclusion: The writer understands what “You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you.” means. This helps him to regain his balance by building up a proper standard to live by. Home work : 1) Review new words and phrases in Text A ; 2) Preview the whole passage. 3rd Period and 4 period Teaching Objectives: 1) Students learn the language points and grammar structures in the passage ; 2) Students practice reading and speaking; 3) Students learn some writing strategies in the passage; 4) Checking on the exercises in Text A; Teaching Contents: 1. Paraphrase the whole passage 1)More than I realized, Dad has helped me keep my balance.

Comparison and contrast is centered around “the son” and “the father” 1) Their attitudes towards people?s staring The son: embarrassed to be seen walking with the crippled father The father: never letting on even when bothered or talking about himself as an object of pity 2) Their ways of conducting oneself The son: envious of another?s good fortune, short of “good heart”, complaining about trifles (Para. 12) The father: brave (courage) to subject himself to the shame and stress without bitterness and complaint, showing no envy of the more fortune or able, and looking for “good heart” in others (Para.5 and 6) 3) Their dependence on each other The son: I put my hand on the father?s arm for my balance of mind when I complain about trifles, when I am envious of another?s good fortune, when I don?t have a ?good heart?. The father: I put my hand on the son?s arm for my balance of body when we walked together, when I went to work, when snow or ice was on the ground. 3. Beautiful sentences in the passages 1) When I think of it now, I am amazed at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to subject himself to such shame and stress.
