Grandpa: Can you tell me about my great-grandfather, Grandpa?
All right, let me tell you a little about his life. My father had a very hard life. His parents died in China when he was young. He had three elder brothers but they couldn’t look after him because they were too poor. So he came to Hong Kong. That was about a hundred years ago. There was no railway back then so he walked all the way. When he arrived in Hong Kong, he worked in a shop. At first he lived with the shopkeeper’s family. His room was small and dark. Why didn’t he turn on the lights?
People used oil lamps at that time, not electricity like we use today. The lamps weren’t very bright.
Did your father have any toys when he was young?
No, he didn’t. Your parents can buy you toys but he was poor so he couldn’t afford toys. There were no televisions either. But on festival days he made his own special toys? like lanterns for Mid-Autumn Festival.
Thank you for telling me about my great-grandfather, Grandpa. Now I know how lucky I am.

Chickens always like to have a clean house. Wednesday 27th July This morning I had a boiled egg for breakfast. I’ve never eaten a fresh farm egg before. It was yummy! I told Jack about it. ‘I don’t want to eat supermarket eggs again,’ I said. ‘I don’t either,’ he said. ‘My egg was delicious too.’
