Discussion on Francoise Sagan’s works’ modernism behind “tristesse”

ABSTRACT

Francoise sagan’s special women writer temperament had created a world of its own nique chracters and charmings ,where”tristesse” was all around.behind ”tristesse” revealed a road of the spiritual seeking,of the wandering,of the lost ,of the unhoused and of modernnity. Hanging around in pensive mood permiated every corner of life,and they sufferd a lot from that,which was more painful than death.

From “howl and other poems ” by Allen Ginsberg, “on the road” by Jack Kerouac , “the catcher in the rye” by james david salinger, to “bonjour,tristesse” by Francoise Sagan,we can clearly see that at that time there only existed being lost,blanked,hopeless expectation and dissolute lifestyle after being survived from the second world war in the captital world. To the youngsters,both the pre-existing value systems and social orders had collapsed at the same time.Francoise Sagans’ rebelling and sorrow becomed symbols of youthfulness,impressing and effecting behaviors of the rebellious youths---the later generation,those who were finding themselves for a life-long time,they filled up their life with rebelingings and sorrows while expressing themselves.

At that time,the most popular philosophy is existentialism,which had a very strong crisis consciousness,there was no more belief and certainty in the whole world.In crisis shadow,the vulnerable individual’s weak existence had utterly revealed.Francoise Sagan had an acurate insight into the weak existence,her “tristesse” was accordingly just the hesitation of those who had a range of choices due to their development.Francoise Sagan’s “tristesse” expressed not only the romanticism in a sadness mood,yet not the sentiment of classics.it was symbolic interactionism which would inevitably generated when youths growing to adults.it was more like a symbol in philosophy.sagan expressed her existential sadness mood in the shape of describing popular novel.she popularized the romanticism of exsitence.

Sagan’s works had both passion and calmness,we should not only focus on her “tristesse” to a surface,but missed the inner meaning.“tristesse” is ubiquitous sensory stimulation,of which benjam called “shock experience”.Sagan represented her ideality in the shape of well-informed “tristesse”.
